Rooms
(2003) For Electronic Tape, 5’ 17”
Rooms is an electroacoustic work that is composed of ambient environmental sounds. The sources were taken on a field recorder in various spaces with an equal variety of microphone techniques. The material is organized in such a way that the acoustic space is constantly shifting. Doors open in one environment and close on another, demarcating sections in the work. The environments also move in patterns. There is a sensation of moving in circles, but with each iteration the path changes and new places arrive on each turn. Real sounds become synthetic, synthetic sounds become real. The "rooms" in this case are places in the house of memory. As the ear moves through these "rooms" there is a shift in perception, a relocation to another memory space.
